Dear friends,
Got Soul?
During November of last year, I amongst others were asked to go to the Methodist youth conference in Northampton to represent the York and Hull District. This was an opportunity an effective way to tell the Methodist church what we, as the young people actually want in today’s church. We did this through several business meetings that took place across the weekend. It was during these that we aimed to debate issues brought to the youth conference through the young people and eventually decide whether the change asked for should be to the adults Methodist conference or not. A range of topics were debated from bringing back sport to the youth conference, to far more serious issues such as sexuality and the encouragement of younger people to take part in foundation training. Included in these business meetings were also opportunities to elect future representatives for Methodist young people. For example, this year a new youth president was elected- Sarah Malik. These business meetings were highly important and are primarily the main of the weekend.
However, other events did take place over the weekend. Worship was a great experience at the youth conference, full of relevant teachings to young peoples’ lives and fantastic modern songs that often you maybe didn’t know even existed! Also, on the final morning there was an opportunity to worship as you felt most comfortable through a range of activities such as writing down prayers on paper shoes and sticking them on a shoe rack (as the theme was ‘got soul?’) to taking communion or sitting in the quiet area to just be still and spend time with Jesus.
Another thing that was available to us was the workshops that took place on the Saturday afternoon. There was a range of activities to explore your own personal faith such as the ‘prayer labyrinth’, ‘question time’ and ‘are you called?’ However if you were looking for something more informal, there was also a range of sports taking place such as rock climbing and football. But, the weekend was all go, go, go! We also had free time from 11pm each night and on the Saturday night we were entertained with some light hearted Christian comedy in a comedy double act, aptly names ‘Toozacrowd’. This offered biblically based humour mixed with quick to create an actually very funny two hours of entertainment which I would highly recommend.
So to sum up, what would I say youth conference was about? Youth conference is about discussing issues that really affect young people and what we want the church to do about it. But also it is about exploring your journey with God, making great friendships, having fun and if I’m honest, the food was pretty good too. If your aged 13-19, if I was to say anything, it would be to apply for youth conference, you won’t regret it! J
