Dear friends,

"It's like getting married only worse!" is a flippant way of saying what ordination is like.  A more serious description would be "This is one of the supreme moments in the life of the Church as well as in the personal lives of the ordinands."  The ordinands will make a public lifelong commitment to serve God and the Methodist people, and the Church will commit itself to use their gifts wisely and support them in ministry.

At Hull Central Hall, Conference will ordain 5 people into the Diaconate of the Universal Church as well as British Methodism.  At the same time they will be received into full membership of the Methodist  Diaconal Order and so enter a covenant of mutual accountability and support with fellow deacons.  The deacons' call, gifts and graces have been tested repeatedly over several years, so that the congregation can confidently declare "They are worthy" to be ordained.

Three people lay hands on the ordinands: the Warden represents the Methodist Diaconal Order.  The President embodies the Conference.  The World Church Representative represents the world-wide Church.  The ordinands receive a Bible as a sign of the Servant Ministry they represent and their role in preaching the Gospel through word and deed.  A Cross is placed round their necks to symbolise entry into the religious order of the Methodist Diaconal Order.

The service is solemn and deeply joyful.  Its words and music are largely traditional, affirming our links with 2,000 years of spiritual continuity.  It culminates in the celebration of Holy Communion, when we rejoice not in what we are experiencing or have achieved but in what Jesus Christ has done and does for us

Sue Jackson     Warden Methodist Diaconal Order
