Dear friends

Today is Pentecost Sunday, often called the birthday of the church. We celebrate Gods gift of the Holy Spirit to his church. A hymn has been written to help us celebrate. It goes to the tune of “Away in a Manger”. I hope you enjoy it.

Luke

Give praise to the Spirit, who heralds new birth,
With pangs that we share with the whole of the earth.
The first fruits we know and our hope is secure.
As Christ's truth illumines what once was obscure.

But birth can be frightening, like wind and like fire,
Who knows what this new world will give or require,
Like Jesus’ disciples we fear what will be
And want Jesus near us to touch and to see.

But teachers must leave us if we are to grow,
By putting in practice the things we now know,
So Peter, who learned at the feet of his Lord,
Could speak, in his turn, of the same living word.

The Spirit still leads us, by visions and dreams,
The Gospel is always much more than it seems,
New language is needed, its truth for to tell,
So new generations can drink from its well.

Whenever we gather for prayer and for praise,
We long for the Spirit to set us ablaze,
Though fearful and weak we can trust where we're blown,
By Christ's love we're saved and by God we are known.
