Dear friends.
Many local churches will have been going through the unofficial ritual of the Methodist New Year, that of sizing up the new minister.
Will Harrison gives a new slant on the practice:
Lord, I have somewhat to say unto Thee concerning this ere minister you have sent us. You know Lord, or have we to keep on telling Thee, that we needed one who could lay the law down like Moses, for there be some queer folk in these parts.
Nar sithee Lord, what thou hast sent us... a man named Smith! You know Lord, what we needed was a strong man like Samson who slew a thousand men with the jaw of an ass. Nart sithee Lord, what thou hast sent us a man named Smith!
You know Lord we needed a fella like Elijah who could spend forty days and nights in prayer. Nar sithee Lord, what thou hast done sending us... a man named Smith! Thou knowest Lord that we needed a preacher like Gabriel who could speak to thousands in different places at the same time. Nar sithee Lord whom thou hast sent us...a man named Smith!
Nar Lord , I’d a thought Thee would have known that this ere place is lousy with Smiths already. I’ll tell thee, there’s ... Blacksmith Smith, Schoolmaster Smith, Tin-bottomed Smith, Farmer Smith, Ten –Acre Smith. Then there’s Peg-Leg Smith, he visits everybody Lord... all the misseses and bairns. Oh I almost forgot Lord, there’s me, I’m one of them too. Nar Lord we was all hoping that we could let this new minister do the jobs we’d all been a doing. After all, he is your servant Lord. Nar sithee Lord, what affine mess thou’s made on it by sending us a man named Smith. Look Lord what a fine mess we’ll soon be in if we’s all got to buckle to it again... if someone says: “It’s a Smith job” an all us Smith’s come running, everybody else will think that the place is on fire and they’ll come running too. O Lord what a fine mess you’ve made on it, sending us a man named Smith! Jesus said he would send the Holy Spirit, Nar that is what we need Lord and He said we were all children of thine, Lord. Lord I’ve been hit with a hammer...O Lord, Lord what a mess I’ve been making of it all... if we are all yourn, that is, if we are all your children...Then your name must be Smith! Could be a miracle... Is it true Lord, that thou hast come thyself to this ere place as a man named Smith!
