Dear friends,
In preparing for this mornings service I came across this resource. I hope you find it useful wherever you are this morning.
Luke
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch, be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields
In Flanders Fields was first published in England's Punch magazine in December 1915. Within months, this poem came to symbolize the sacrifices of all who were fighting in the First World War. Today, the poem continues to be a part of Remembrance Day ceremonies in Canada and other countries throughout the world.
The poem was written by a Canadian—John McCrae, a doctor and teacher, who served in both the South African War and the First World War.
News of Members and Friends
Brigitte has telephoned from Estonia and sends her love to everyone. Her newest grandchild has arrived and mum and baby are doing well.
Some of you will remember Ken and Evelyn Finlison who were members here in the 1970’s/80’s. Ken’s work as a customs officer meant they moved about the country. They came to Hull settling happily at Central Hall and decided Hull was to be their home on retirement, even though they were Devon people. Ken was a local preacher and circuit steward here. Evelyn was very much involved with the Women’s Fellowship and sang with the Euriskon singers here. They sang in our choir. Eventually they had to return to Devon to be near aged relatives. Sadly some years ago Ken died and recently Evelyn has move into a care home her address is: - Walmer House Care Home, 6 Ash Hill Road, Torquay, TQ1 3HZ. Jean and Tommy
